People who stare at their screens for an extended time period can create a risk of a temporary condition called computer vision syndrome (CVS). Such people may experience problems such as eye strain, dry eyes, vertigo, double vision, and headaches.

Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), is many a times referred as Digital Eye Strain, which is a vision-related issue that generates from extended pc, tablet, e-reader, and cell phone usage. A lot of people experience eye discomfort and eyesight problems when working on digital displays for prolonged periods. The degree of distress seems to increase with the time period of digital display use.

Normally, we blink about 15 times every minute, which prevents them from getting irritated and dry. But several researches have discovered that people blink less than half as often when they’re studying, viewing, or playing on a screen. Also, the contrast of text against the background, color temperature, the warmth, and flickering from electronic displays can be difficult on the eyes.

  • Although we have to stare at screeens everywhere, be it our home, work place or traveling places, however, we can reduce the problem of digital eye strain by making use of screen time wisely. Cutting down usage of gadgets and limiting screen time for mostly work purposes are some options that must be considered.
  • Always remember to adjust your screen settings. If you notice a problem of eye straining with current settings of your laptop or desktops then you must at first adjust the brightness, font sizes, and contrast level of the screen until what you feel suits best to your eyes.
  • Eye pressure often is caused by excessively bright light from outdoor sunlight coming from a window or by unpleasant interior light. When you work on screens, your ambient lighting needs to be about half as smart as that normally found in most offices. Eliminate outdoor lighting by closing curtains, shades or blinds. If at all possible, place your computer monitor or screen so windows would be to the side, rather than in front or behind it.
  • Another cause of computer eye strain is exhaustion caused due to focusing. To lower your risk of tiring your eyes by continually focusing on screens, look away from the computer at least 20 minutes and gaze at a distant subject/point (at least 20 feet away) for at least 20 seconds. Some eye doctors call this “20-20-20 rule.” Looking far away calms the focusing muscle in the eye to reduce fatigue.
  • Get an extensive eye evaluation done. If you are witnessing recurrent headaches, watery eyes, and blurry vision, then now is the time to get a detailed eye exam done. Remember to notify your ophthalmologist regarding the term of computer usage at the workplace and at home.
