Dr. Jim King early pioneer in using microcurrent
This month I had a wonderful visit by Dr. Jim King who stopped in the Healing the Eye Center to say hello! Dr. Jim King is one of the early pioneers of microcurrent, he along with Dr. Jarding and Dr. Michaels were the first Optometrists to use microcurrent treating eye disease. Please read the article Dr. Michaels published in 1993.  Click here to read the Article.  Dr. King was the one that introduced Paul Harvey to the miracle improvement of Sam Snead’s Macular Degneration.  I became interested in Microcurrent when I heard Paul Harvey’s report regarding Mr. Snead. You can listen to Dr. King tell the story on how he was at a medical meeting in Phoenix when he timidly knocked on the door of Paul Harvey’s home to tell him the exciting news about the golf legend Sam Snead.  Thank  you  Dr. King!

“The Vitamin Myth or Misleading Journalism?”
Oddveig Myhre, NMD, MS.
A little while ago, I don’t know if any of you saw the Reader’s Digest where the front recent page read “The Vitamin Hoax – 10 Not to take”.  If you actually read the article I believe a more fitting title would be:” Is your vitamin up to par?”  As stated in the article about $7.5 billion is spent each year on vitamins and other nutritional supplementations.  Are they all bad?  No! However multiple studies have shown that the quality of over-the-counter (OTC) supplementation is poor.  Actually when OTC vitamins and supplements are tested, about 50% of them fail to even contain what the label claims.
So are the vitamins bad or is the quality of the vitamins the actual issue?  I explain to my patients that you get what you pay for.  If you are buying a car for $500 do you expect it to be a Rolls Royce?  Most cheap vitamins are poor quality and sometimes they are actually more detrimental to your health because of it.  For instance, fish oils, a great source of omega-3 fatty acids, must be high quality fish oils.  If the fish oil is cheap, it may be rancid and can contain high levels of heavy metals which will absolutely cause more damage than good.  So, when continuing to read the article in Reader’s Digest, poor quality of vitamins are the actually topic, but would you have guessed it based on the title?
Interestingly the journalist refers to some studies that show low to no benefits of vitamins.  Hmmmmm……, did anyone notice who did these studies?  The Journal of American Medical Association published these, and most of them are sponsored by…….. you guessed it: pharmaceutical companies!  Is there possibly a conflict of interests here? The following is a quote from Dr. Marcia Angell, former editor in chief on the New England Journal of Medicine:  “The combined profits for the ten drug companies in the Fortune 500 (35.9 billion) were more than the profits for all of the other 490 businesses put together (33.7 billion).  Over the past two decades the pharmaceutical industry has moved very far from its original purpose of discovering and producing useful new drugs.  Now primarily a marketing machine to sell drugs of dubious benefit, this industry uses its wealth and power to co-opt every institution that might stand in its way, including the U.S. Congress, the FDA, academic medical centers and the medical profession itself”.  I think this quote speaks for itself.
Last year I was at an ACAM (American College for Advancement in Medicine) conference where one of the key speakers, Jeff Blumberg, PhD, FACN, CNS, was just covering this topic.  He shared some very interesting facts about these studies about vitamins not “working” that are currently being published.
First of all, there are over 40,000 studies done on vitamins and minerals, but when the criteria were set to determine if nutritional supplementation would be beneficial, only about 800 studies qualified.  Which studies do you think they picked?  That’s right, they picked the ones that didn’t show any benefit and used those to prove that vitamins doesn’t work.  Did you also know that in most of these studies that were done, there were no limitation to patients taking there own supplements in addition to the ones that where tested?  How can you compare results of nutritional value if everyone in the study is taking everything?  Besides, nutrition is found in the food, so how can you regulate the effect of nutrition?  Of course there are no beneficial results when the studies are so poorly regulated.  Even the former head of NIH, Dr. Bernadine Healy, deemed these negative studies about vitamins as “alarmist and silly”.
Furthermore, Dr. Jeff Blumberg, when speaking at the ACAM conference, pointed out that often the doses of the supplementation used in these studies are either to low to make a difference or in a form that your body can’t utilize.  So again, why is it expected that the vitamins will work wonders when they are given in a form that we know won’t work?  However, the author of this article is pointing out that a healthy diet and regular exercise is still the best way to maintain health, which is absolutely true in my opinion.  Eating poor food and being overweight is the fastest route to aging and chronic illnesses.  Nevertheless, what is not mentioned in the article is that today’s food is often very low in nutritional value.  Even when you eat a healthy diet, there may not be enough nutrients in the food due to the poor quality of the soil that was used.  There are studies showing that today’s fruits and vegetables only contains about 30-50% at best of the vitamins and minerals as compared to the 1970’s.  Hence, it would make sense to supplement your food with a good multivitamin, and I don’t mean the kind that costs you $5 at the local grocery store.

Last but not least, part 2 of this article is talking about the “10 [vitamins] not to take-list” which includes, Vitamin A, beta-caroten, vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, folic acid, niacin, lycopene, iron and zinc.  Does this mean that you should never take these vitamins?  Absolutely not, however they should be taken in the right form, the right dose and according to your needs.  This is where a good multivitamin comes in to play.  On our shelves we have pharmaceutical grade vitamins that will address specific needs of the patient such as age, gender and diseases.  We carry these things because we know that our patients often have illnesses and conditions that stems from poor diet and/or poor digestion.  I have seen multiple times the remarkable effect of just some good nutrients in my patients when they are given what they need.
So back to the article from the Reader’s Digest.  Didn’t it sound like you should quit taking vitamins when you read the title? When in all actuality they are telling you to make sure you need to take GOOD quality vitamins that fit YOUR needs.  Now why couldn’t the journalist just write that as a title……….

Rotating prisms and the “Colonel Gould Technique”
All of our patients are introduced to the VOSTAR test and rotating prisms during our 3 day program. The VOSTAR measures  perception in space.

March 2009This test measures how your eyes coordinate with each other and your perception of space. An example of a coordination problem might be that one eye has a tendency to deviate inward. This could result in eye strain or double vision when you are fatigued. The idea of perception of space is something new to me but it has become very valuable in evaluating and treating patients. A patient’s visual field might be normal and the acuity level very good but if the perception in space is deviated then functional vision will be limited. I have observed that many macular degeneration patients have their visual space pulled inward.

This inward pulling results in a decrease in peripheral vision. This can be a problem especially when a macular degeneration patient is loosing his central vision. This additional loss of peripheral vision can greatly limit the functioning ability. Once the peripheral vision is expanded, the quality of the functioning vision greatly improves.
See this link on the 3 basic exercises

Colonel Jack Gould from Desoto, TX has developed a variation in the exercises and we have called this the Colonel Gould Technique.  He stands 65 feet away from the tool shed- He then fixes his eyes on the door hasp wearing prism glasses.  He walks very slowly towards the hasp. He reaches a point about 15 inches away about reading distance. Then he backs up the to the 65 feet. Why these exercises?  Sometimes the eyes are misaligned like the misaligned wheels  on a car. You might think that you are driving straight but if the wheels are not aligned the vehicle will not work effecrintly . Many patients who I exam their perception is turned inward or they are turned up or down. This gives a person a false perception of space and interfers with their function.  A cup of coffee might appear to be in exact location in space BUT if your eyes are not aligned you could misjudge  reaching for the cup of coffee and have an accident. We have developed 3 exercise to help realign the visual system.

New vision aids-
Earl Schemrich was part of the 3 day program in March 2009. He is very enthusiastic wood- worker who had to give up his hobby because of his macular degeneration. Since using the Jordy   0501 he is back in the wood shop!  The Jody is a valuable visual ad for improving functioning vision at distance and near. I am always grateful when patients introduce me devices to help improve function.  Earl gave a demonstration on using the Jordy to the group attending the 3 day program and  patients had the opportunity to test the device. The response was very enthusiastic.

The second instrument he uses is the  Power Mag 6.5X . This device is a magnifier with a powerful light that increases the illumination of letters. How many time have I heard that if only had more light I could read. This instrument satisfies those requirements.
