Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an eye disease that commonly occurs in people over 50. What happens in this condition is that macula, which is a small part of retina, gets damaged. A healthy macula allows us to have a clear central vision. So when there is damage to the macula, the person’s central vision is going to suffer. This means that the person would still be able to see things on their sides, since the condition doesn’t impact the side or peripheral vision. But they will not be able to clearly and properly see the things right ahead of them.

Although AMD on its own doesn’t result in total blindness, but it can deteriorate central vision to a great extent, which can in turn cause disruptions in daily living. Age is certainly a big risk factor for AMD, and so is a family history of AMD. But in addition to age and family history, there are other lifestyle related factors too that can put you at risk of developing AMD. These factors include high blood pressure, smoking, unhealthy diet, lack of enough physical activity, etc.

What can one do to tackle this distressing eye condition? Here are some suggestions:

  1. Use Supplements to Get the Vitamins You’re Missing

Sometimes it’s difficult to get all the essential vitamins for good eye health from diet. This is even truer for older people who often follow a restricted diet suitable for their age. In such a case, the best option is to go for vitamins supplements. Taking the supplements will ensure that you are fulfilling your vitamin requirements regularly and properly.

  1. Follow a Healthy Diet

In addition to the vitamin supplements, you also need to focus on getting your diet right. Incorporate more green leafy vegetables, nuts, whole grains, fish, and fruits in your daily diet. You should also try to minimize the amount of refined carbohydrates in your diet.

  1. Keep Your Eyes Protected from the Sun

There is a possible link between exposure to sun and AMD. Hence, you should do your best to avoid overexposing your eyes to the sun rays. Using hats and sunglasses whenever you are outdoors would be a good way to start.

  1. It’s Time to Give Up Smoking

Giving up smoking is good for your overall well-being. It is also effective in protecting your eyes against AMD. Smoking is one of the major risk factors for AMD. But the good news is that it is also a factor that you have the power to control. So this would be a good time for you to give up smoking and take a step towards healthier living.

  1. Make Exercising a Part of Your Daily Life

Exercising daily is a great way to take care of your overall fitness as well as your eye health. So take some time out of your daily routine to devote to exercising. Exercising will help in keeping a healthy weight, which is also important for eye health.
