Our eyes never evolved into stare at screens for extended periods of time. If you consider it, our bodies are the same from 10,000 years back. Back then, we did not have digital apparatus and our eyes have yet (if ever) to evolve into this new technology. Given that computers are a brand new innovation it might be lifetimes, if ever, because of our own eyes develop to handle computer usage.

Two of the main culprits behind Digital Eye Strain are Glare and Blue Light. These byproducts of monitors can contribute to several of the symptoms such as irritation eyes, eye fatigue, nausea, eye headaches, eye strain, and fuzzy vision.

Blue Light is a large energy light that digital devices emit. Blue Light sits at the upper end of the visible light spectrum, so directly alongside UV light, and consequently has short wavelengths (that is directly connected to energy amount ). That is why another name for Blue Lighting is HEV lighting: high-energy visible light. Years past, screens did not create much (if any) Blue Light because the screen technology was distinct.

Our screens are much more energy efficient that is easier for the environment, less problematic on the electricity grid, and even more affordable. However, the downside is the high energy light can bother our eyes.

Blue Light

In addition, Blue Light has some other negative consequences. Our melatonin secretion, which helps us fall asleep is also suppressed by Blue Light. Using digital devices at nighttime can cause it is harder to fall asleep during sleep quality or night. Last, there are studies from the stem and even animal cell models that reveal a correlation between overexposure to retina damage and Light, most notably what seems degeneration. This could make sense which is the reason we wear sunblock and UV sunglasses to protect ourselves.


The second culprit, glare, is unnecessary feedback that enters the eye. This, then, stresses cause issues and our attention such as headaches and eye strain. Glare exists elsewhere in the world too. Some of us are particularly prone to oncoming auto lights. This is because of a sensitivity to glare.

You can find other contributors to Digital Eye Strain, as well. A common issue is that our eyes were never made to stare at an object or an electronic device up close or, for long periods at one time. When looking 20 feet away, our eyes are at rest.

Looking at something such as a telephone, pill, or pc, which will be inches away from us creates pressure in the eye. Importantly, it induces both the ciliary muscle in our eye to strain back and forth to adapt to this screening that is close proximity. This contributes to symptoms such as blurry vision, eye fatigue, and headaches also. We can relax the ciliary muscle to assist negate these results, by including a magnification.

Past Blue Light, warmth, and up-close viewing, you can find a couple of other reasons why individuals experience Digital Eye Strain. Blink rate that is reduced is an issue. We’re so absorbed with what we’re doing together with the digital devices that we neglect to blink up to now. Our eyes are prevented by blinking from drying out.

Therefore, itchy or dry eyes can be attributed to blinking. Positioning and posture of devices are just other variables. Our devices, which may cause back pain, or even neck, shoulder pain are often hunched within by us. Our digital devices are so positioned by us that we’ve to force ourselves to sit an awkward position, which is in inconvenient, baffling ways, which further hurts our stance. All these are problems to fix by simply transforming your workplace setup!
