Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is an eye disorder which is responsible only for central vision loss. To learn what causes macular degeneration, let us first understand where does it exactly occur.

This vision blinding disease is caused when the human eye’s macula begins to erode or break down. What is macula? It is located in the center of the retina and contains the largest concentration of light-sensitive cells and cones. The macula in the retina is responsible for human’s central vision and also renders an ability to distinguish fine details. So, eroding or breaking down of the macula is the primary cause of AMD.

Many surveys and researches have proved AMD to be a leading cause of vision loss in people aged 60 or older. However, people with an age of 40 or above are susceptible to AMD.

To be specific in understanding the issue of AMD. It is important to note that AMD is responsible only for the central vision loss and does not cause total blindness. It means, the individual suffering from AMD would lose their central vision, but their peripheral vision would be intact.

Note: Central vision assists you to view straight ahead and peripheral vision is about what you see on the sides when looking straight ahead.
