UPDATE ON THE SWINE FLU
There is much concern about the flu epidemic and the media is covering this in an insane manner. Is this in conjunction with the Pharmaceutical companies to put us in a state of panic so we line up like sheep to take our “flu shot” and anti-virals? Yes we are in midst of the flu season but this is something that happens every year! Did you know (data from the CDC) that over 36,000 people die from the flu every year in the United States! The number of deaths in Mexico City is only about 1 millionth of their population.
My advice is to stay calm and healthy. I presented a talk on Homeopathy in the treatment of flu at the 77th International Syntonic Light Conference in Niagara Falls Canada. Homeopathy has consistently out performed traditional medicine in the treatment of epidemics and flu since 1813! Studies have documented a mortality of 28.2% in the Spanish flu epidemic of 1918 under allopathic or traditional care, and under homeopathic care the mortality was only 1.05%!!

Do Not get the flu shot!
Dr. James R. Shannon, former director of the National institute of health declared, “the only safe vaccine is one that is never used.”
They are usually useless because the virus mutates
Contain toxic substances among these are mercury, formaldehyde and aluminum
Sharp rise in autism followed the introduction of measles, mumps and rubella vaccines in 1975
Will introduce animal RNA/DNA into your body

Circadian Research by Mark Rea, PhD, Professor of Cognitive Science and Director. Lighting Research Center, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute presented at the International Conference on Light and Vision Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada

Dr. Rea presented a very interesting paper on the effects of light during the day on circadian rhythm and melatonin production at night. I previously wrote about the importance of getting a good night sleep in a totally dark room https://healingtheeye.com/melatonin.html
His research indicates that if you are not exposed to enough light during the day it can affect your sleep cycle and your health. His research revealed that blue light at 470 nm (the color of the blue sky) had the greatest impact during the day. He conducted a study at a nursing home looking at the affects of blue light on the sleep cycle. A group of seniors looked at blue LED lights for one hour in the evening after the sun set. Their sleep was checked every 2 hours during the night. The group that looked at the blue light were found to be sleeping 90% of time and the control group (no blue light) only 65% of the time.
This study has amazing implications. We need to expose ourselves to more bright natural light during the day to keep the circadian rhythm of the body functioning. A proper circadian rhythm according to Dr. Rea not only helps us get a good night sleep but he showed several studies that indicate it will also reduce the incidence of cancer and chronic disease.

Importance of grounding your body
Dr. James Oschman lectured on the topic of Energy medicine and gave us his insights based on his years of research in the fields of light and electromagnetic energy. He reviewed the research of Albert Szent-Gyorgi from Budapest who received the Nobel Prize for the synthesis of vitamin C and his work in studying the function of muscles. In his later years he developed a new approach to the study of biology called electronic biology. After observing the reaction of a cat jumping after seeing a snake he felt that no way can this be mechanical or biochemical. The reaction can’t be explained by slow moving chemical reactions. Just like a slow chemical reaction can’t exlain a batter hitting a fast pitch.

Electromagnetic fields and light is the model he used to explain these phenomina. This was what Albert Einstein was working on his last 10 years of life. It is protons, electons and light that regulate the body and Szent-Gyorgi felt that this took place in the collagen matrix of the body which acts like an electronic crystal. According to Dr. Oschman, “Proteins are the stage upon which the drama of life unfold-
the actors are protons, electrons and photons.”

I would suggest that you read his book Energy Medicine: The Scientific Basis by James L. Oschman and Candace Pert (Paperback – Jun 15, 2000)
Dr. Oschman states that tissues in the body are liquid crystal and living tissues create light and utilize light for their functioning. “The biochemical model involving subtrate molecules until they bump into an enzyme is like the drunken sailor model”

If metabolism worked according to the biochemical model it would take 10,000 years to digest food!

Dr. Oschman believes that the key to health is a proper electromagnetic balance in the body. The best way to achieve this it to ground your body. How? Take off your shoes and walk barefoot on the surface of the earth. He feels rubber sole shoes are preventing this grounding that is essential for health. He presented several case studies of patients who were cured of chronic ailments by taking off their shoes and becoming grounded to the earth!

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW.. BY DR.O
Is your blood sugar optimal? Take the quiz at the end!
Just recently I was volunteering for the fitness center across the street and we did some screening of several of their members in regards to their health. They filled out a 3-page questionnaire that asks questions about their general health such as their digestion, how well they sleep and their energy levels etc. Interestingly, all of them were found to have some form of blood sugar problems. The most known blood sugar condition that we see in the office is type 2 diabetes, which is a condition where your own insulin hormone is no longer working properly. This happens when insulin cannot bind efficiently to its receptor (insulin resistance) or when the pancreas cannot make more insulin due to decreased production (insulin insufficiency). Most of the time this is condition that is completely preventable if your diet is low in simple carbohydrates (sugars), high in vegetables (complex carbohydrates), fiber and lean proteins. However, most of my patients do not even realize that they are eating as much sugar as they are. For instance, many of them think instant oat meal is just as good as old-fashioned steel-cut oat. It is not! If you can cook your oats in 5 minutes that means the fiber in the oat has been removed and all you are left with is the simple carbohydrates which are just a form of simple sugars. The same goes for most cereals out there, so just make sure to read labels so that you know what you are eating.

However, there is another blood sugar conditions that most people including doctors forget about. This is called hypoglycemia which is where the blood sugar drops below the minimum healthy baseline. This condition should also be addressed because early intervention could prevent unwanted conditions such as chronic fatigue, allergies, thyroid problems, menopausal symptoms, type 2 diabetes and more. When your blood sugar drops, your adrenal gland has to secrete out a hormone called cortisol to maintain your baseline blood sugar that is necessary for your body to function. Your brain is very sensitive to low blood sugar levels, so often patients reports that they cannot think, they get blurry vision and their hands shake when their blood sugar drops. These are all neurological signs of low blood sugar, so I would like to remind all our vision impaired patients that blurry vision during the day can be related to your blood sugar being low. When this happens on a regular basis it stresses the adrenal gland and eventually this gland gets worn out. Symptoms of low adrenal function is low energy, increased inflammation and allergies, tendencies to eat more sweets which increases the risk of type 2 diabetes and a decreased metabolism due to a slower thyroid. This often leads to putting on weight due to eating more carbohydrates, sweets, chocolate, candy, cookies etc, to get the energy needed to get you through the day. The adrenal gland also regulates several hormones such as pregnenolone and DHEA which are precursor hormone for the sex hormones testosterone and estrogens. This often leads to menopausal issues in women and erectile dysfunction in men. Hormone conditions in my opinion are often wrongly treated by giving sex hormones. I find patient do much better if instead their adrenal gland is supported so that it can produce these hormones on its own. One thing you can do to help your adrenal gland is to maintain a steady and healthy blood sugar by eating 3 healthy meals that are high in fiber and lean proteins with 2 small snacks between meals. The snacks should also be high in fiber and protein. For instance, the snack could be a ½ an apple with 1 tsp of almond butter, 5-6 raw almonds or a teaspoon of protein shake mixed in hemp milk or water. If you don’t maintain your blood sugar steady throughout the day, your body will go into a stress response until you eat again, so that you can survive the low blood sugar. Chronic stress like this will prevent your body from healing and may actually cause premature aging instead. To find out if you are having blood sugar issues – answer the following questions. If you answer ‘yes’ to more than 5 of them you should consider discussing this with your doctor.

  • Do you crave sweets during the day?
  • Do you get irritable if you skip meals?
  • Do you get jittery, shaky, or have tremors if you skip meals?
  • Do you depend on coffee to keep you going through the day?
  • Does eating relieve tiredness?
  • Do you get easily agitated, nervous or upset?
  • Do you feel you are more forgetful or that your memory is getting worse?
  • Do you have blurry vision that comes and goes?
  • Do you get tired after eating a meal?
  • Do you crave sweets especially after meals?
  • Do you still have cravings for sweets even after eating it?
  • Do you have frequent urination?
  • Do you have increased thirst and appetite?
  • Have you put on weight that doesn’t respond to diet?
  • If your waist measurement larger than your hip measurement?

LATEST EYE RESEARCH
Risk of Advanced Age-Related Macular Degeneration after Cataract Surgery in the Age-Related Eye Disease Study Published in the Journal Opththalmology Feb 2009
This studied showed no clear effect of cataract surgery on the risk of progression to advanced AMD although it is contrary to previous studies.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataract are 2 of the leading causes of visual impairment in the United States. The relationship between cataract surgery and the development of advanced AMD has generated interest among ophthalmologists. Concerns have been raised regarding the potential of cataract surgery to accelerate progression to advanced, vision-threatening forms of AMD in a number of studies.

In the AREDS population that was followed up carefully at frequent, regular intervals for a long period, it seems that cataract surgery was not associated with a clinically important increase in the rates of development of advanced AMD.

However, it remains important that individuals with large drusen and pigmentary changes have an understanding of their risk for progression to advanced AMD with or without cataract surgery and that this risk is discussed with the patient before cataract surgery. Persons with intermediate AMD (bilateral large drusen) or with unilateral advanced AMD should be aware of the fact that the risk of developing advanced AMD is as high as 50% in 5 years. These results are contrary to the results of some previously published epidemiologic studies, including 2 reports that each pooled data from different population-based studies.

The 5-year results of the Beaver Dam Eye Study and the Blue Mountains Eye Study. Study identified persons with and without a history of cataract extraction at a baseline examination and reexamined them for incident AMD at 5 and 10 years. They found an association between cataract surgery and the 5-year incidence of late AMD

For the Beaver Dam Eye Study, cataract surgery before baseline was associated with an increased risk of advanced AMD and in the Blue Mountains Eye Study, there was a 3-fold increased risk of advanced AMD .

I still caution individuals to delay cataract surgery until they have visually significant symptoms. I strongly recommend alternative treatments first for 3 months. If these don’t improve your vision so you don’t need surgery. At least your body and eye will be in better state of health to reduce the incidence of complications and development or progression of macular degeneration.
